David Mahoney was commissioned by the seminal US alternative newsweekly The Village Voice to create a portrait of jazz musician Charlie Parker. Newly appointed Creative Director Andrew Horton asked David to create this for the newspaper’s Music section. Music news and reviews have been a core feature of the newspaper since its’ launch in 1955. David’s work joins a long history of illustrated portraiture at the Voice.Says David: “I have often leaned towards illustrating musicians and celebrities in my personal illustration work, for that reason this assignment was especially enjoyable as I was able to draw such an influential jazz musician as Charlie Parker. Furthermore it is rare that I illustrate in colour so it’s always exciting to be commissioned to add a small burst of colour to my work.”
