Biography

Carne Griffiths graduated as an illustrator in 1995 before moving into a career in fashion and textiles. He worked as gold wire embroidery designer for 12 years, progressing from draftsman to Creative Director at the soho based atelier Hand & Lock.

During his time as creative director he produced intricate designs for the military, film, theatre, fashion and advertising industries. Carne created embroidery for the Coronation of the King of Tonga to working with Chanel and Alexander McQueen, his embroidery designs were used in films ranging from Valkyrie, The Last King of Scotland and the screen version of Phantom of the Opera. Carne’s elaborate floral designs for Asprey were included in their first ever catwalk collection and his work graced the commemorative cover of the 80th Royal Variety Performance programme in 2008.

Carne began to work as a fine artist and illustrator in 2010, his approach to painting utilised calligraphy inks and liquids such as tea and alcohol to create layered artwork. His approach focuses on captivating the viewer and holding their attention, before revealing subtle layers within the work and minute details hidden within each layer.

Much of Carne’s work explores connections with the natural world which draw upon his experience as an embroidery designer fused with a love of portraiture. Flow of line and dynamic movement are both elements he will bring to each project.

Previous clients include Microsoft, New York Observer, Derwent, Ibis Hotels, Joyce, Cle de Peau, Woodford and Warner, Hunger Magazine and The Lakes Distillery.
