Introducing Nicky Ackland-Snow

News hero 417

Inspired by stories imagined within found ephemera from the past, Nicky is passionate about creating new meanings from old contexts. Her work has a strong conceptual base and uses typography and metaphor to create layers of visual poetry. The technicolour utopianism of the 1950’s has inspired a feel-good approach to her illustration, projecting hopefulness and fun.

Having actively engaged in editorial and publishing projects for the illustration industry over the last 30 years, Nicky has also been inspired by a range of opportunities in the commercial art world. Working in the arenas of festival branding, international product merchandising, illustrated commercial interiors and authorship, Nicky embraces all possible outlets for her work.

Nicky has a BA in Graphic Design from Bath School of Art which helped to mould an illustrational approach with a strong base in design principles. She lives, works and lectures in the South West of the UK and continues to scour the flea markets, auction houses and old book shops for hidden treasures.

Endorsed by her art hero at her Degree Show, Nicky sold her first piece of art to the legendary Peter Blake – this remains one of her proudest creative moments.

Introducing Gianluca Folì

We are delighted to announce that Début Art now represents Italian illustrator Gianluca Folì. Gianluca Folì is an award-winning illustrator who lives and works in Rome. He likes pizza but doesn't play the mandolin. In more than 20-years of his career, Gianluca has pursued a path of study, of gaze, of search for his own intimate vocabulary. He explores the connection with things, visually referencing the objective correlative in the poetry of Thomas Eliot and Eugenio Montale which clearly represents emotions through things and the breaking of the boredom of everyday life. Gianluca's images stem from this narrative, transformed into shapes and colours by an alchemical process, with elegant momentum and modulation of the visual. The creative force of his images is balanced by a tightrope walking technique, in a happy and magical balance between drawing and color, between reality and the surreal. The arrival at a more direct code, made of synthesis and simplification, suggesting and ev...
